A Celebration for Mozart

... and all of Vienna is invited

29 January 2006 Final Report

Stimulating, breathtaking, moving and intense - an elevating atmosphere that only Mozart could inspire. WIENER MOZARTJAHR 2006 issued an invitation to the three-day “Celebration for Mozart” and thousands of Viennese and visitors from all over the world answered the call. In the sparkling sunshine - and despite arctic temperatures - they revelled in the spirit of Mozart:

Journeys with Mozart

Over a period of three days, more than 47,000 people attended 115 different events in Vienna’s cultural institutions. In addition, 33,000 visited the MozartFestZelt tent on Stephansplatz. WIENER MOZARTJAHR 2006 has proven that with an ambitious, high-quality programme it is possible to inspire enthusiasm for culture in all generations and all sectors of society and thus attract new audiences. The children’s programme alone introduced 4,000 children to Mozart in an entertaining and creative way.

Moreover, 40 television teams and over 300 journalists from print media and radio came to Vienna from the four corners of the earth (Dubai, Korea, Japan, USA, Slovakia, Hungary, Belgium, France and Germany, to name but a few) to report on the celebrations. The Web site www.wienmozart2006.at was accessed nine times as often as before.

Mozart’s Coronation Mass and other sacred works, performed at St. Stephen’s Cathedral on the composer’s birthday, were broadcast in 40 different countries. In Austria alone, 300,000 viewers enjoyed the performance on television.

“A Celebration for Mozart” has unequivocally shown that Vienna is a metropolis of culture ? for everyone.
